TVB Winter Gravel Series!
January 15th First Meeting
Join us Tuesday January 15th, 2019 for the first installment of our Winter Gravel Series. If you’re interested in learning more about gravel riding, routes, gear, how to dress, nutrition or just about anything gravel cycling related, be here at 6:00 p.m. on the 15th. If you’ve never ridden gravel before or if you’ve finished the Dirty 130, this is for you.
This first get together will simply be a meeting. Our goal for the evening will be primarily to answer any questions y’all have about gravel and get oriented with some basics of riding Tennessee and North Carolina’s best roads. We’ll cover safety, hydration (including water treatment), bike selection, routing/mapping, clothing choices, nutrition, training, tools and repair. . Our second goal this evening is to discuss our route for February. We’ll head to North Boundary and Black Oak Ridge for our first ride together. This area is a nice jumping off point for gravel riding. It’s not got any sustained climbs but has some punchy stuff and is relatively convenient. We’ll shoot for about a 25 mile ride out there. Our idea is to work up to a bigger route in March. We may ride part of the “Hardford 50” route or something comparable as the finale. Ultimately, it’s up to y’all. Please, come out and let’s make this happen!
February 3rd First Ride
On Sunday the 3rd, we’ll head out to Oak Ridge for a no drop, beginner friendly gravel ride. We’re looking at about a 25 mile ride but will have options for an early finish too. The route will link up both Black Oak Ridge and North Boundary areas for a nice introduction to what’s available right in our backyard. This will be a great test for gear, nutrition and bike selection without the stakes of a more back country experience. We can all go out to eat somewhere following.
February 12th Second Meeting
Okay, so you’ve done your first gravel ride, or maybe your 100th but now it’s time to review the things that worked or didn’t work and what you liked or disliked about the ride. Show up at 6 p.m. to TVB for a recap over some beers or Topo-Chico. This evening we’ll work on refining our set-ups and getting our nutrition dialed for the second ride. In addition, we’ll hone in on our second ride route. TVB will have a couple of route options ready to choose from based on how folks are feeling. We’re aiming for progression here, so the second ride will be hard. Not too hard, but hard. There is a fun gravel race called Southern Cross in Dahlonega, GA the weekend of our second ride so that could be an option if some folks want to try some gravel racing. Regardless, show up and let’s prepare for big day in the woods. It’s what TVB is good at.
March 3rd Second Ride
It’s here. The ride we’ve been working toward. Although, the route is still in the works it will be a fun and hard ride. At least one big climb will make an appearance. We’ll shoot for something close to 50 miles here. This will be a no drop ride but it will also be the real test of the skills and gear choices we’ve acquired during the last couple months of training and meeting together. Water, food and gear selection will play a more important role here than in our first ride. Perhaps we’ll see some wildlife. We’ll prepare for anything including a super fun time with friends.
